Kenya men’s and women’s beach volleyball teams failed to qualify for the FIVB World championship during the Continental qualifiers in Morocco.
After the end of the qualifier at the Martil beach in Tétouan, the top four teams in each gender qualified for the championship that will be held on November 14-24, 2025, in Adelaide, Australia.
The men’s pair of Elphas Makuto and Jairus Kipkosgei and Wilson Waibei and Brian Melly failed to go past the Round of 24, while the women’s pair of Olympian Gaudencia Makokha and Sharleen Maywa and Veronica Adhiambo and Mercy Iminza failed to go past the round of 16.
Team manager Robinson Okoth said this after the team’s dismissal performance, “Our teams played their best the only challenge they had was a very short period of preparation, the depth of the sand in Morocco was so deep compared to where they trained at Strathmore University. Climate also contributed because it’s very hot over here but in Nairobi it was also cold during their afternoon training.
Lastly, most of the countries have full time training for beach volleyball players making them more used to the game than ours whom most of them are picked from convectional volleyball,”
He added, “I urge the federation to consider taking beach volleyball players to several competitions, come up with several beach playing courts in Kenya apart from Strathmore and Mombasa, and if possible, start beach volleyball league to make our players more regular. I also urge them to consider taking the team to the coming beach volleyball event in Burundi
