Olympians Gaudencia Makokha and Brackcides Agala have welcomed the FIVB Beach Volleyball Coaching Course that served off on Sunday in Nairobi.
The Coaching Course under the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) instructor Javier Bosma from Spain will run through to March 20 at the Nyayo National Stadium and Strathmore University ground.
Makokha said that the course was one of the kind saying she didn’t get the chance to learn proper skills when she started playing but was quick to note that with the course, she will be able to pass the knowledge to the upcoming players.
“The course wouldn’t have come at a better time. We needed this knowledge so that we can share it with the young players so that they can grow with the basics and knowledge about the sport,” said Makokha, a former Kenya Pipeline opposite hitter.
“Ignorance about the sport is also on the other level. The sport is associated with the elites and so learning the skills will help us extend the knowledge to the grassroots,” she added.
Agala echoed Makokha’s sentiments adding that they will have the proper understanding of the game going forward.
“When you pick up a new sport when you are older you tend to miss the basics of the discipline and that’s what I went through but I’m hoping that whatever I will learn here I will share with the young ones who will grow in sport with proper knowledge and thus becoming better players ,” said Agala, former Malkia Strikers captain.
Among the 26 participants who are also in the course are players Phoscah Kasisi, Ibrahim Odour , Jairus Jepkosgei and Donald Mchete and National referees Agnes Masalange, Judith Tarus, and
Fredrick Gitau who decried lack of facilities and interest in the sport.
The Course was officially opened by Kibra Member of Parliament Peter Orero who lauded the players for enrolling for the Course.
“This shows growth and progress of the sport. If the players can enroll for the course, then that shows passion which a good thing. The development shows that right skills and knowledge will be passed to the upcoming players, “said Orero.
Also present during the official launch at Nyayo Stadium were Kenya Volleyball Federation President Charles Nyaberi, deputy president Paul Bitok, Secretary General Ismail Chege, Vice gender Lilian Mududa, deputy treasurer and course director Moses Mbuthia and National beach coach Patrick Owino.
