Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) men’s volleyball team captain Dennis Omollo remains unfazed despite a tough Second Leg League encounter against rivals Trailblazers.
KPA has a date with Trailblazers in one of Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) Men’s National League weekend highlights at Nyayo National Stadium on Friday.
Kenya Prisons currently top the KVF log on 11 points whilst KPA and Trailblazers tie on six apiece.
Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), who will not be in action this weekend, have amassed four points from three matches. KDF are away in Nigeria for the ongoing African Military Games.
Reflecting on their tough weekend fixture against Trailblazers, KPA’s Omondi -who is also a Kenya National Volleyball mainstay and left-attacker– explained: “We beat Trailblazers 3-2 in the tournament in Nyeri and I’m sure they want to avenge the defeat. So, we expect them to come hard at us. For us, we are not on a revenge mission. We just want to play well and tackle our adversaries as they come. We are unfazed and under no pressure.”
Meanwhile, the dockers have wasted no time in trying to keep fit in the current Nairobi weather.
Asked what it feels to face a team (Trailblazers) they’re tied with on the log, Omondi went on: “We don’t want to lose any more matches like we did in Nyeri against Prisons. So, we decided to come to Nairobi early to ensure that we adapt to the weather. Mombasa is very hot at the present, so taking the early bird option in Nairobi gives us an early opportunity to acclimatize and prepare well, by and large. I am glad that all and sundry in the team have adapted to the weather situation in Nairobi and are raring to go.”
Omondi says his players are now turning the page and unwilling to repeat the mistake that cost them a top position in the League last season.
He added: “Standards have been set and only the sky is the limit. We know the Blazers are a very strong outfit. Last season they beat us 3-0 in the League and the result adversely affected our final standing on the table. We are leaving nothing to chance in ensuring we improve our ranking through and through the competition. The players are psyched up and ready to go the extra mile:”
Commenting on their loss to Prisons in Nyeri, Omondi said in finality: “Prisons were very good in Nyeri. But then again, we kind of lacked the much-needed endurance; being the start of the season. We played three matches and I wish we had met them on Friday.”
